RUBY KEELER TIME STEP
Last month I gave you a taste of the Paddle and Roll and the Louis DaPron Cramp Breaks. If you read the little Tap History blurb at the end you will notice that Louis DaPron worked with Ruby Keeler at Paramount Studios. That lead me to giving you this month’s step, The Ruby Keeler Time Step.
Ruby is best know as the star of the Film 42nd street and danced with Dick Powell. The pair were the sweethearts of film in the 1930‘s. She appeared in nine Warner Brothers Musicals. She was married to Al Jolson from 1928 to 1940. Google her and find out about all her accomplishments and see her perform!
This Time Step is the perfect example of what is called a Prefix Time Step. That means that there is an introductory section immediately followed by a more traditional Time Step.
In the case of this Ruby Keeler Time Step, the “prefix” is Shuffle, Hop, Hop, Ball Change . The dancer then continues on with the Standard Time Step of their choice. (Standard just means that it begins with a Shuffle)
THE RUBY KEELER TIME STEP
8& SHUFFLE R
1 HOP L
2 HOP L
3& BALL CHANGE RL
4& SHUFFLE R
5 HOP L
6 STEP R (SINGLE)
a7 FLAP L
& STEP R
Replace the Shuffles in both sections with Stomp Spank to make the Buck version of the step. If the Prefix is done with the Buck Version, the main section should also be Buck, but you decide! Remember…there are no Tap Police!
Try using the two Hops to turn the step or make one group face forward while the other faces back.
