JANUARY STEP OF THE MONTH

I’m on a roll with “celebrity” Time Steps and no collection would be complete without Ann Miller.

Although I’m sure that there are many variations, this is the one I most commonly use.

The Heel and Ball Drops can be done as notated or double time to more accurately depict the speed that Ann was famous for!

Fun Facts about Ann MIller:

  • Miller helped popularize pantyhose in the 1940s as a solution to the continual problem of tearing stockings during the filming of dance production numbers. The common practice had been to sew hosiery to briefs. If torn, the entire garment had to be removed and resewn with a new pair. At Miller’s request, hosiery was manufactured for her as a single pantyhose. (wikipedia)
  • Her real name was Johnnie!
  • At the end of her MGM contract she flew overseas to Morocco to entertain on the Timex TV Hour for Bob Hope. She sang and danced “Too Darn Hot” in 120 degrees heat entertaining rive thousand soldiers.
  • Miller was famed for her speed in tap dancing. Studio publicists concocted press releases claiming she could tap 500 times per minute, but in truth, the sound of ultra-fast “500” taps was looped in later. Because the stage floors were slick and slippery, she actually danced in shoes with rubber soles. Later she would loop the sound of the taps while watching the film and actually dancing on a “tap board” to match her steps in the film. (wikipedia)
  • Her tap shoes were called Moe and Joe and were exhibited in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.
  • Ann began her Hollywood career at age eleven, and with her vibrant personality, great legs and her tap dancing, won a seven year contract with R.K.O. at the age of thirteen (claiming to be eighteen).

Go google Ann or find her work on YouTube.
